5 Things we’ve learned about pinterest vs. facebook

This age belongs to networking, and the social networking sites make it easier. Today we have networking sites in for every walk of life, if you want to be professionally contacted there is LinkedIn, if you want to find friends there is Facebook, if you want to share common interests then there is Pinterest and the list goes on and on.

But in recent surveys there are some facts and figures which have amazed all of us.

The two networking sites we’re taking a look at are Facebook and Pinterest. This survey was done on a sample audience of 50000 visitors from March 15th to April 15th this year by an online jewelry retailer Boiticca who has monitored these users.

It is an interesting case of consumer behavior at a different level altogether. There was a mixed bag of results which can be attributed to the general profiles of the users of the two sites.

So what’s new, what did we find out?

1. Pinterest users spend more than twice as much as Facebook

Pinterest as we all know the social networking site which works on the concept of virtual pin board can having people with similar interests. This particular result can be attributed to the difference in the profile of the users of both the sites.

2. Pinterest drives more Sales than Facebook

Again the results were indicating on the fact that the 10% of the transaction came through Pinterest as compared to the 7% which came through Facebook.

3. Pinterest helps you acquire more new users

Thanks to the reference generation Pinterest was able to attract new customers. The numbers show that there were 86% more new users at Pinterest where as Facebook witnessed only 57%. Now this can be alarming for the networking site that has been in this space since 2004.

4. Pinterest users are not as engaged as Facebook users

This study also revealed that the audience of Facebook is involved with a particular product or Brand at a different level. That means they get to interact with them more. On an average, a Facebook user spent about more than 7 hours every month on the platform and on the contrary a Pinterest user spends only 98 minutes per month.

5. Pinterest hurts your conversion

This is an interesting statics. The conversion of Facebook is whopping 73% where as the Pinterest has only 51%. Although the new user, numbers were great for Pinterest, but the end result which is the conversion was higher for Facebook.

It is all about social commerce.

The idea of all the social networking sites is to ultimately gain the maximum returns through social commerce. We can see, after viewing the results of this survey, Pinterest which has attracted over 10 million users which is faster than any other site in a similar domain. However, the results of this survey are a mixed bag, and there are lots of points to be taken in to consideration by a veteran networking site like that of Facebook.
